We are now in an era called the anthropocene, a geological time where human actions have had a significant impact on climate change and the ecology of the planet. It is a time of contradiction, for we simultaneously destroy and abuse the environment, as we are more conscious of the importance of livelihood and biodiversity for our well being. How do we begin to understand interconnectedness? What would it be to live in a world of sentient beings, participants in the decisions affecting our planet? As the Australian environmental philosopher, Freya Mathews states, living things do take active measures, they are self realizing systems trying to exist. To treat them as persons means negotiating with them in matters that concern them. The world will be enriched by a multiperspectival view and further increased by communication across species.
